What is the Rain Bird Inline RBY Filter? Designed primarily for use with drip irrigation, which is most in need of serious filtration to prevent the plugging of the tiny emitters, this is a filter that can be installed on the valve assembly. The Y is short for "Wye" filter, and the convenient homonym also is hinted at in the filter's shape.

Why the Rain Bird inline filter? This is a static filter built for low-volume (drip) irrigation systems. It is simple to clean, and replace when necessary. This is a glass-filled filter, as opposed to a disc filter which is also commonly used in low-volume irrigation.
